Moving Your Site to BIT Hosting

How will I move my site to your server? This question usually arises when you already have a site (and domain) and receive emails to the addresses in that domain.

First, you should understand that web (your site) and emails are not the same systems. They are quite independent. The thing that binds them together is the domain name. That name is serviced by another system – DNS. So, we have three services (Web, email and DNS), and each of them could run on a separate server.
In a typical scenario we’re talking about two servers: a server of your current provider (let’s name it server O) and our server (let’s name it server N).

Second, you should make a decision, where to get what – what server will run which service.

Case 1

You want to move from your current provider to our server completely. It means that currently server O runs all three services for you: it holds your DNS, it sends and receives emails for your domain and it runs your site. Moving to our server means that now server N will run all these services for you.

  1.   Your email boxes should be created on our server
  2.   Your site should be deployed to our server
  3.   Your DNS should be moved to our server
  4.   You need to adjust the record for your domain in Internet registry so that it lists new name servers (our ones) for your domain

Technical details:

You should specify the following name servers for your domain in the registry:
ns1.strategic-hosting.com
ns2.strategic-hosting.com

Case 2

You want to keep everything as it is and just have your site on our server. It means that DNS and emails run on server O and only website runs on server N.
  1.   Your site should be deployed to our server;
  2.   DNS should be adjusted so that www.yourdomain.com points to our server’s IP address
Nothing else should be changed. Server O will hold your DNS and emails.

Technical details:

Your network administrator should delete existing records of type A for the names yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com and add the following two records:
www.yourdomain.com.     CNAME     yourdomain.com
yourdomain.com.        A        12.34.56.78
(Assuming that 12.34.56.78 is an IP address assigned to your site on our server. This number is specific to each customer)

Case 3

You want to keep your email on your current provider but move everything else to our server. It means that server O will hold your emails, but DNS and Web will run on server N.
1)    Your DNS should be moved to our server;
2)    Your site should be deployed to our server;
3)    You need to adjust the record in the registry and switch your domain to our server

Technical details:

You should specify the following name servers for your domain in the registry:
ns1.strategic-hosting.com
ns2.strategic-hosting.com

Notes

Please note that in all three cases the details should be negotiated before any changes made to configuration of any of three services. It is always better to involve a technical specialist in that negotiation who understands the possible impacts. The matter is that we described only typical cases, but there could be other details that affect or are affected by such movement - e.g. additional services (like FTP), other sites in your domain, subdomains, etc.
